Better AI Voices & iPhone Duo Support

Today we’re launching a new set of AI Voices with a big jump in quality, and support for iPhone Duo.

Better AI Voices

When we launched AI Voices last December, they were a clear step up from the system voices on iOS and Android. Text-to-speech models have continued to improve, and these new voices sound more natural, especially over long articles.

You can listen to a sample with our previous generation AI Voice Grace, against the next generation AI Voice Ashley:

Previous Generation (Grace)

Next Generation (Ashley)

We’re launching 30 new AI voices across 13 languages:

  • English (US): Ashley, Dennis
  • English (UK): Graham, Rosalind
  • Polish: Wojciech, Szymon
  • German: Tobias, Sabine
  • Dutch: Lennart
  • French: Alain, Hélène
  • Spanish (LatAm): Valentina, Bruno
  • Spanish (Spain): Rocio, Sergio
  • Hindi: Manoj, Aanya
  • Italian: Gianni, Orietta
  • Japanese: Asuka, Kenji
  • Korean: Hyunwoo
  • Hebrew: Yael, Oren
  • Portuguese (Portugal): Madalena, Leonor
  • Portuguese (Brazil): Murilo, Maitê
  • Chinese (Simplified): Yichen, Xinyi

Dutch, German, Hebrew, Korean, and Polish are newly supported languages, and we’ve also included dialects for Spain (es-ES) and Portugal (pt-PT).

AI Voices are available with an Instapaper Premium subscription. To listen to voice samples and select the new voices, navigate to Settings > Voices.

iPhone Duo Support

iphone-duo

Instapaper now has full iPhone Duo support! We improved the layout to ensure it would work well across both folded and expanded layouts, customizing typography, button placement, and other conventions for iPhone Duo.

The layout adjusts as you fold and unfold the device, so you can start reading while folded, and expand to fullscreen to resume reading right where you left off.

Thanks for reading! As always, our roadmap is informed by your feature requests and bug reports, so please don’t hesitate to reach out with any feedback, questions, or concerns to support@instapaper.com.
