Now in beta testing: New Text parser with inline images!

Go to your Account Settings page to enable it. When enabled, it will affect both the iPhone app and the website. (Not the Kindle yet.)

For the iPhone app, only articles downloaded after you change the option will be affected. To redownload them all, go into the iPhone app’s Settings screen and tap “Clear and re-download articles”.

About the new text parser

It’s completely rewritten to be much more accurate and robust. In addition to being able to strip out much more extraneous navigation, header, and footer text that doesn’t make sense in text-only reading, it now also allows some inline images to be kept if they’re part of the story’s main body content.

I’ve been testing it for a month with no major remaining issues, but this is the first full-scale public test. Please let me know if any pages don’t work properly by emailing the page’s URL to textparser@marco.org with a brief description of the problem if it’s not obvious. Thanks.
